Las Vegas has been the setting of many hit films, and for many of us, one of the big attractions of leaving the online baccarat tables is the chance to see the sights that have become so familiar from the big screen.
In recent years, one of the most successful films to be set in Vegas was The Hangover, and since its release in 2009, there have been reports of people contacting Caesars Palace hoping to reserve the suite where the film’s chaotic morning-after scene takes place. Unfortunately, for fans of the film, the Hangover Suite at Caesars Palace does not exist, despite the fact that there seem to be innumerable websites and adverts claiming otherwise.
The Story Behind the Suite
In case you haven’t seen it, The Hangover follows a group of friends who wake up in a destroyed hotel suite after a bachelor party they cannot remember. The room is enormous, chaotic, and extremely luxurious. They find a tiger in the bathroom, a baby in the closet, and a scene of devastation that suggests the previous night was something other than a typical hotel stay.
Because the film features the real exterior of Caesars Palace and several scenes filmed around the resort, many naturally assume the suite must also exist. The logic leading to the assumption holds up more than a decade after the film was released, and the misconception is helped along by online booking sites and promotional listings that imply fans can stay in the same room.
In reality, the production never filmed those scenes in an actual hotel suite. Instead, the filmmakers constructed the room entirely on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.
The set designers built the space specifically for the film, which gave them far more flexibility than they would have had filming in a real hotel room. By building a set, they created a situation where walls could be moved, sections could be damaged repeatedly during filming, and animals could be safely included in scenes.
Unsurprisingly, as one Nevada film official explained, hotels generally prefer not to host productions that involve large amounts of on-screen destruction or unpredictable animals.
Why People Still Try to Book the Suite
Even though the truth has been known for many years, it isn’t widely known. Every year, Caesars Palace receives inquiries from guests hoping to reserve the famous room.
The situation isn’t helped by the fact that there are other film-related suites at the resort. Caesars Palace has been featured in numerous films over the decades, and some productions have used real rooms for filming. For example, the 1988 film Rain Man shot scenes in an actual suite at the property, which is occasionally mistaken for the fictional Hangover room.
Photos circulating online only increase the misunderstanding. Third-party booking sites sometimes promote luxury suites with film-inspired names, which gives the impression that the film location can be rented. The truth is that these are simply high-end rooms being marketed with a bit of Hollywood flair, and they are not genuine filming locations.
It is in the interest of Las Vegas to embrace this kind of storytelling. The city thrives on references to films, celebrities, and exaggerated experiences, and a suite linked to one of the most famous Vegas comedies of the modern era definitely helps to attract more customers.
A Film Room That Never Existed
Because the Hangover Suite at Caesars Palace was designed purely for the film, it was built to be more dramatic than any standard hotel accommodation. Its huge layout and rooftop access suggest an experience that many would love. However, it is also an experience that would be impossible to create an actual hotel tower. Real suites have structural limitations and operational concerns. Film sets do not.
Nonetheless, if you are in Las Vegas, you can still walk through the lobby, see the hotel entrance, and enjoy many of the locations used throughout the film, which are all welcome distractions when you need a break from the baccarat tables.
