Abu Dhabi Confirms the Location of Its New Sphere

Las Vegas is famous for having some of the biggest tourist attractions in the world, which often inspire people to leave their online baccarat games and visit the city. One of the most recent attractions to open is the Sphere, the enormous venue that has become one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Strip.
Now, Abu Dhabi is preparing to build the second Sphere in the world. After months of speculation, officials have confirmed that the venue will be constructed on Yas Island, one of the UAE’s top entertainment destinations. Building work is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, and the new venue will closely mirror the technology and scale of its Las Vegas counterpart.
Why Yas Island Was Chosen
The new Sphere will be built between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, which will place it in the middle of one of the busiest entertainment districts in the region. Yas Island is already home to attractions including Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit, and an increasing number of luxury hotels and entertainment venues.
Like the Las Vegas venue, the new Sphere will accommodate around 20,000 people and feature the same immersive technologies, including its enormous exterior LED display, wraparound interior screen, and multi-sensory effects. The venue is expected to host concerts, sports events, large corporate gatherings, and the famous “Sphere Experience” productions.
The new Sphere is being developed under a 25-year franchise agreement between Sphere Entertainment and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism. Under the arrangement, Abu Dhabi will fund construction while Sphere Entertainment is providing its proprietary technology, content, and operational expertise in return for franchise fees and ongoing royalties.
Building on the Success of Las Vegas
When the Las Vegas Sphere opened in 2023, it immediately became one of the city’s most talked-about attractions. Its giant exterior display regularly dominates social media, while the immersive interior has hosted concert residencies, sporting events, and specially produced visual experiences unlike anything seen before.
The success of the venue is proof that people are increasingly looking for truly spectacular experiences, and Abu Dhabi is hoping to capitalize on this. The city has invested heavily in tourism over the past decade and has developed Yas Island into a world-class destination.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, described the new venue as:
“A platform for Emirati culture, Emirati talent and Emirati storytelling, shared with the world on the grandest stage ever built.”
Entertainment Is Becoming a Bigger Part of Casino Destinations
Although Abu Dhabi’s Sphere will not be attached to a casino, the project is very much in keeping with a trend that has been influencing gambling destinations for years. Modern casino resorts increasingly rely on entertainment to attract visitors, and in some cases, the gaming facilities are almost secondary.
Las Vegas has had a tradition of hosting world-class performers and events for decades. People travel to the city for concerts, sporting events, restaurants, shopping, and attractions just as often as they do for the casino games.
Yas Island has adopted a similar approach, combining theme parks, Formula One racing, shopping, beaches, hotels, and now one of the world’s most technologically advanced entertainment venues.
Construction of the second Sphere in the world is expected to continue over the next several years, with the venue due to open towards the end of 2029, meaning that the Las Vegas Sphere will not be unique for much longer.
