Elvis Never Performed “Viva Las Vegas” in Concert
There are few songs more closely associated with Las Vegas than Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas”. You hear it in casinos, at sporting events and, unsurprisingly, during Elvis tribute shows. For those who enjoy occasionally leaving the online baccarat tables to visit Las Vegas, it is difficult to imagine a song that better sums up the city.
However, there is something very surprising about the song’s connection to Elvis. Despite performing hundreds of shows in Las Vegas, Elvis never sang the original Vegas song live in concert. The song that has effectively become the soundtrack to his association with the city was apparently never part of his live repertoire.
“Viva Las Vegas” Was Not Initially One of Elvis’ Biggest Hits
“Viva Las Vegas” was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman for the 1964 MGM movie of the same name, which starred Elvis alongside Ann-Margret. Elvis played Lucky Jackson, a racing driver who heads to Las Vegas hoping to earn enough money to buy a new engine for his car.
The song was released as a single on April 28, 1964. Interestingly, its original success was fairly small when compared with many of Elvis’ biggest records, and it only reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. The other side of the single, Elvis’ version of Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say”, actually performed better and reached No. 21 on the chart.
Of course, its popularity has grown enormously since then. Today, “Viva Las Vegas” is probably one of the first songs most people would associate with the city. It is regularly performed by Elvis tribute acts, and it regularly appears in popular culture whenever Las Vegas is the subject. It was even given an impromptu rendition by Travis Kelce at Allegiant Stadium following the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.
This makes it very easy to assume that Elvis must have performed the song during his famous Las Vegas years. However, he didn’t.
Elvis Played Hundreds of Vegas Shows Without Singing It
Elvis returned to live performance in Las Vegas in 1969, beginning his famous run at the International Hotel on July 31. The hotel later became the Las Vegas Hilton and is now the Westgate Las Vegas.
Over the following seven years, Elvis performed 636 shows at the hotel, and his final appearance there took place in December 1976.
There is a vast amount of documentation from this period. Many of the concerts were professionally recorded, and fans and collectors have spent decades cataloging Elvis’ performances and setlists, and none contain a live performance of “Viva Las Vegas”. Nor is there evidence that Elvis performed the song while touring elsewhere.
This was not because he refused to perform songs he had not originally made famous. His Las Vegas shows included covers of numerous songs by other artists, such as “Proud Mary”, “Polk Salad Annie” and “Yesterday”. Live versions of these songs were included on the 2007 Elvis: Viva Las Vegas compilation, but the album had to use the original studio version of its title track because there was no live version available.
Why Did Elvis Leave “Viva Las Vegas” Out?
There does not appear to be a definitive statement from Elvis explaining his decision, so any explanation has to involve some speculation.
One possible reason is that Elvis wanted to distance himself from much of the movie material he had recorded during the 1960s. After his successful 1968 television comeback special and return to live performances the following year, he was once again presenting himself primarily as a serious live singer rather than a Hollywood movie star.
In addition to coming firmly from his earlier movie period, the relatively disappointing chart performance of “Viva Las Vegas” may also have meant that Elvis did not regard it as an essential part of his catalog.
The strange part is that the song became far more closely associated with Las Vegas over the years and today, Elvis tribute performers regularly include it because audiences expect to hear it. Today, if someone put together an Elvis show in Las Vegas and left out “Viva Las Vegas”, it would seem much stranger than including it.
That result is one of the more entertaining quirks of Elvis’ relationship with the city. Tribute artists who perform the song in their white jumpsuits may look exactly as people imagine Elvis performing in 1970s Las Vegas. Still, as soon as they start singing the song, they move away from producing an authentic Elvis Vegas show.
The real Elvis sang a huge number of famous songs during his 636 performances at the International and Hilton. Still, the song that eventually became most closely associated with Las Vegas wasn’t one of them, as Elvis never sang the original Vegas anthem live in concert.
